What does it mean to acquire knowledge and how does it affect us?
Acquiring knowledge is both a necessity and a challenge. Knowledge shapes our perceptions and influences our choices, yet it can sometimes become overwhelming, creating biases or preconceived notions that are hard to shake. In some stages of my life, I’ve tried not to let the knowledge I gained consume me, seeking a way to live without the weight of prejudices accumulated along the way. The process of gathering knowledge, while essential to survival and growth, often makes it difficult to maintain an open and unbiased perspective. This fundamental reflection became the seed of inspiration for this game. Through its mechanics, I wanted to express how knowledge is acquired both involuntarily and voluntarily, creating different outcomes, expected and unexpected.
Development
As I was developing the core mechanics, I used simple UIs and sample images to build basic movements and categorize knowledge into different types: involuntary, voluntary, reproduced, and bias. Each type of knowledge acts differently—some are absorbed passively as players move, while others require players to actively search for them. But the knowledge doesn’t just sit there; it evolves, sometimes randomly creating new forms or biases linked to what’s just been learned. All of this gets archived in a “brain inventory,” where players can see how different kinds of knowledge connect, creating a kind of mental map.
Throughout the game, players also experience the character’s occasional urge to return to a “shelter,” a safe place that calls them back at random moments. It’s a symbol of human inertia, that part of us that resists stepping out of our comfort zones even as we learn new things. This pull of familiarity vs. the push of exploration is woven into the gameplay, making the journey of learning feel as complex and challenging as it often is in real life.
